Ride Conditions
This tour is a mix of paved and unpaved roads however heavily biased to touring off road and demands a dual purpose (on-off road) motorcycle equipped with tires having a more aggressive tread pattern for off road traction. Prior off road riding experience is essential. No single track. In addition to prior off road riding experience the riders physical condition, riding skills, and tolerance to more primitive and possibly unpredictable travel scenarios may be tested.

Highlights
Set aside any anxiety you may have about Colombia as it has effectively regained its title as one of the most desirable travel destinations in Latin America. World travelers will undoubtedly testify to its gracious people. As the TV ads, say "the only risk you take is....not wanting to come home!"

The 11,000 foot passage at Cuesta del Obispo is but one of many High Andes thrillers with-ever changing scenery.

Potosi at over 13,000 feet is a mining city with colonial Spanish elegance.

A stunning view of the snow covered Cordillera Real mountain range greets you in the far distance as you descend to the world's highest capital city, La Paz. This cosmopolitan city is most unusual because of its location 3,000 feet deep within a bowl-like crater.

View the crystal blue waters of Lake Titicaca in Peru. Natives exist along its vast shorelines growing over 300 varieties of potatoes.

Riding the Alto Highway on the way to the lake front town of Puno is a real thrill for sporting riders. Silk smooth, rubber-gripping "twisties" tempt you but magnificent views of Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, compete for your attention.

Cuzco according to the Inca is the "center of the universe". It indeed is worthy of the title and without a doubt a highlight of the High Andes Expedition. The plaza is large and traditionally Spanish, but you need only to wander the narrow streets to discover remnants of its ancient past. Incan stone work, many pieces weighing several tons, were ingeniously laid centuries ago and fit without even the slightest gap.

Machu Picchu. This lost Inca city was only discovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham. High atop a pinnacle peak the meandering stone holy place was overlooked and thus spared the usual destruction by Spanish conquistadors. Machu Picchu is magic!

The salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia and the area of San Pedro de Atacama are new additions to the High Andes Expedition making this our best High Andes experience ever.

The Andes are South America. From its tropical beginnings in Colombia and Ecuador all the way to the snow capped peaks on the edge of the southern Patagonia, in Chile & Argentina, this geological spine is the longest continental mountain range in the world, over 4,300 miles.

Cross the High Andes pass at Portillo into Chile and see the distant peak of Aconcagua, the highest mountain of the Andes at almost 21,000 feet.
