Frequently Asked Questions & Information for theRio Grande to Panama Canal Tour
What documents will I need?
A current passport with at least eight blank pages. You will need a clear, and positively accurate motorcycle title and registration in your name. We suggest an international drivers license in addition to your regular license
Is this a good tour for a passenger?
Definitely. However the passenger should be an experienced long distance tourer and share in the commitment to maintain an attitude of flexibility and open-minded acceptance of Latin America. It’s vital for the passenger to be in good physical health. If desired, your passenger can fly in and participate on a portion of the tour. Contact MotoDiscovery for special pricing and consultation on this matter.
What kind of motorcycle is best for this tour?
The dual-purpose touring machine is really in its element here. We have taken Goldwings and Harley dressers on this ride without problem. More importantly your mount must be in the best of mechanical condition and a motorcycle you can handle. We have observed riders who are not willing to accept that they no longer are able to easily ride, on a day to day basis, the larger, heavier touring motorcycles. This becomes even more evident in the touring environment outside of North America. If this sounds like you, consider lightening your load, downsizing and enjoy your ride with us to the Panama Canal!
What about freighting the motorcycles to the USA at end of the tour?
The motorcycles will not require crating and will be ocean freighted in a secure container from the port of Panama. All riders will participate in the container loading process in Panama. Riders and their passengers will then fly the home. The motorcycles will arrive in Houston, Texas in two to three weeks sailing from Central America. Time must be allowed for US Customs processing. You are then free to retrieve the motorcycles from our secure warehouse in Houston. You may want to call on the services of a reputable motorcycle freighting company such as Federal Motorcycle Transport. Call (800) 747-4100. As complicated as all this seems, we have been orchestrating such arrangements successfully for years.
What’s not included?
Fuel, tolls of approximately $25, border-crossing fees of approx. $180 per bike, meals other than those selected as part of the program, return air from Panama, alcoholic beverages with meals, luggage handling & staff tips, motorcycle liability insurance or emergency medical insurance. While no visas are currently required for US citizens, should that change you will be responsible for obtaining and paying for travel visas.
More Information?
To address most questions and tour preparation needs, you will be provided comprehensive materials well in advance of the tour.
