Those who have had the good fortune of riding with us in Turkey inevitably are looking forward to a quick return. It is a very easy place to fall in love with. Descriptions such as the “bridge of the continent” or “birthplace of civilization” abound but none can describe the sensation of riding through a land is so profoundly rich in history and archeology.  To begin and end this event in the magical city of Istanbul is a stand alone highlight. To venture completely around the mystical and mythical Black Sea through seven Eastern European countries with MotoDiscovery is an opportunity to ride in advance of the tourism hordes before they steal the romance. World touring enthusiasts should not miss this one.

Highlights

  • We'll start this journey on the European side of the Bosporus in the enchanting city of Istanbul. Turkey has become our new love and you will share in our fascination of this vibrant ancient city once known as Constantinople.
  • As one of the newest members of the European Union, crossing into Bulgaria will likely be one of the most event free border entries of the tour. Riding along the coast it will soon become apparent how ancient this body of water is as well as the life that it has supported through the millennia. Evidence of Greek, Roman, Ottoman and other civilizations dot the countryside and shores.
  • Romania, another fresh EU member will offer cultural and riding pleasures, exploring the heavily forested Carpathian Mountains, viewing castles and fortresses and witnessing the rural life of its warm and enchanting people.
  • Moldova is a small country, caught in the middle of invasions and passed around among the conquerors for centuries, it has finally settled into independence. Evidence of Soviet era bland architecture and memorials to their icons mix with ornate and classic architecture from a more colorful pre-Lenin period. Wines from the region are legendary.
  • The Ukraine, especially the Crimean Peninsula, has long been a playground for Russian aristocrats and enjoys layers of fascinating history and cultural diversity. Eighty different ethnic groups are represented in this region of the Black Sea. With Mediterranean style climate, cities such as Odessa, Yalta and Sevastopol are holiday destinations that will be fascinating and fun stays during this MotoDiscovery event.
  • Russia. One can anticipate encountering die hard Soviet era bureaucracy on entering this part of the world. It is ingrained. But border crossings aren’t new to the MotoDiscovery team and we will be pulling out all the tricks and certainly a few rubles to get the job done! Not all if officialdom. This portion of the Black Sea adventure promises some fascinating insight into the lifestyle of our once Cold War adversaries. From seaside resorts to beautiful churches, theaters, wineries and fields of tea, Russia will be a highlight of this event.
  • Political squabbling has resulted in closed borders between Georgia and Russia so an overnight ferry will be employed to transport riders and motorcycles to the city of Trabzon in Turkey from which Georgia will be entered and enjoyed. Georgia is a place of mythical legends, the birthplace of Stalin and is part of an ancient trade route between Greece and India. A four hundred year governing by Arabs until the year 1121 adds another taste of ethnic to the region.
  • Returning to Turkey the Black Sea is known for the curious and in some respects humorous Laz ethnic group. This region was also almost entirely inhabited by Greeks until the mid 1920’s during which time an “exchange” occurred that uprooted those of Greek heritage in Turkey to return to the homeland of their forefathers, and Turks residing in Greece to resettle in Turkey. Count these events to make for great story telling and historical insight into this ancient part of the world.
