This event is recommended for those who have already participated on a MotoDiscovery Copper Canyon ride and wish to return for a more intensive and challenging off pavement adventure. The Sierra Madre Occidental beckons the moto-adventurer to explore its remote canyons, tackle its wide rivers ascend its towering peaks, and navigate through its arid chaparral. Along the way you will encounter those who live off the land; the cave dwelling Tarahumara, the Mayo and the Tepehuan Indians.
If you love to ride, don’t mind getting dirty, sleeping beneath the stars for a night or two if necessary and love Mexico as we do, then let this be your next motorcycle adventure.
Highlights of Itinerary
Note that the diversity of the Sierra Madres of Chihuahua, Sonora and Sinaloa offers numerous itinerary options and that each Explorer date is likely to be different than the next. Itineraries will have “flex” stages to accommodate the unforeseen nature of the region. The following highlights are representative of what you may encounter on this advanced Copper Canyon Ride.
- We’ve made the decent into Batopilas Canyon more times than we can remember, yet we never tire of its dramatic panoramas. Nearly 5,000 feet in five miles! This is a test for even more challenge to come.
- River crossings have become the symbol of obstacles to be conquered in the world of adventure go anywhere touring. You’ll have your opportunity to be photographed either conquering or being conquered by the water ways that slice through the Sierra Madres.
- Urique is a village founded in 1690 situated along a river and in a canyon of the same name. It is the deepest canyon of the Sierra Tarahumara complex. Like a number of villages, followers of Spanish Conquistadors discovered silver and gold and after a period of dormancy, today mining in the region is being revitalized. Urique is not your normal tourist town.
- Alamos has provided MotoDiscovery riders with tastes of Colonial charm for decades. It will be a welcomed stop, civilization with some exquisite dining and comfortable lodging.
- After tackling the Copper Canyon region there will be two nights on the Sea of Cortez to relax, get a little sunshine, enjoy some sea food and prepare man and machine for the return leg to Creel.
Expedition Tour Support - We take this seriously
MotoDiscovery has traveled the high Andes of Bolivia and Peru, the Patagonia of Argentina and ridden through Iran. Plans will soon have us in the thin air of the Himalayas and the Egyptian Sahara desert. (See In the Works) In the world of organized Expedition touring few rival our experience. For this reason you should know we will be approaching the Copper Canyon Explorer Advanced Expedition with a higher degree of preparation and precaution than usual.
- There will be a satellite phone on board the support vehicle.
- The support vehicle will be the go anywhere European military Unimog (scheduled for spring of 2008)
- Critical GPS waypoints will be provided on arrival
- Itineraries will be purposefully designed conservatively to provide “head room” to limit exposure to riding at night as well as fatigue which can result in rider errors.
