If there is an essential destination for the motorcycling adventurer, it would have to be the Andes of South America. This is an event beyond description. What is certain that until you have walked in the mysterious Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru, witnessed the flight of a condor or looked into the ancient eyes of the Aymara Indians of the Altiplano of Bolivia, you can not possibly be fulfilled. Don’t let this one slip away. If you have a dream, we are here to make it reality.
Itinerary Highlights
A detailed itinerary with overnight stops will be provided to Expedition participants.
- Cross the High Andes pass at Portillo into Argentina and see the distant peek of Aconcagua, the highest mountain of the Andes at almost 21,000 feet.
- Travel the northern arid reaches of the Patagonia and visit the city of Mendoza.
- Ride the Province of Tucuman, and experience numerous climate zones from lush green tropical forests to high desert.
- The 11,000’ passage at Cuesta del Obispo is but one of many high Andes thrillers with-ever changing scenery.
- Tupiza, Bolivia is where the law finally caught up Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1908. Here the ladies are affectionately referred to as Cholitas. They sport traditional garb including a derby-style hat, the shape and color of which distinguishes their region of origin.
- Potosi at over 13,000 feet is a mining city with colonial Spanish elegance.
- A stunning view of the snow covered Cordillera Real mountain range greets you in the far distance as you descend to the world’s highest capitol city, La Paz. This cosmopolitan city is most unusual because of its location 3,000 feet deep within a bowl-like crater.
- View the crystal blue waters of Lake Titicaca in Peru. Natives exist along its vast shorelines growing over 300 varieties of potatoes.
- Riding the Alto Highway on the way to the lake front town of Puno is a real thrill for sporting riders. Silk smooth, rubber-gripping twisties tempt you but magnificent views of Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, compete for your attention.
- Cuzco according to the Inca, is the “center of the universe”. It indeed is worthy of the title and without a doubt a highlight of the High Andes Expedition. The plaza is large and traditionally Spanish, but you need only to wander the narrow streets to discover remnants of its ancient past. Incan stone work, many pieces weighing several tons, were ingeniously laid centuries ago and fit without even the slightest gap.
- Machu Picchu. This lost Inca city was only discovered in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham. High atop a pinnacle peak the meandering stone holy place was overlooked and thus spared the usual destruction by Spanish conquistadors. Machu Picchu is magic!
- If you are fortunate you’ll catch a glimpse of a majestic Condor in flight over the Canyon de Colca.
- Atacama Desert. No place on earth can compare to the awesome towering dunes that meet the sea.
- The salt flats of Uyuni in Bolivia and the area of San Pedro de Atacama are new additions to the High Andes Expedition making this our best High Andes experience ever.
