This is an advanced adventure ride consisting of a combination of on and off-road riding and visiting exceptional locations such as Death Valley, Titus Canyon and the Alabama Hills.
On this ride you will experience the best sections of the Southern California Backcountry Discovery Route (CABDR-South) as well as excellent sections of the Nevada BDR. The trip will be primarily on double-track dirt roads, connected by sections of pavement. Other pavement sections will be used when desired/needed in the case of bringing us to particular destinations or sights not to be missed.
Our accommodations will include hotels, motels, and cabins (no camping). Our support truck will carry your gear and all essential backcountry support equipment to keep the bikes lightweight.
The details of the route will be sent to you prior to the event start, but here are a few of the highlights about this adventure:
This route can be ridden by any dual-sport or adventure motorcycle from 250-1250 ccs equipped with knobby, DOT approved tires (such as the Continental TKC80). Your bike should have a range of 150-200 miles, however, we will have spare fuel on the support vehicle if required for smaller-tank bikes.
Disclaimer: Due to the technicality and remoteness of this event, we require participants to ride dual-sport and mid-sized adventure motorcycles with displacements of 250 to 790 CCs.
Past customers who have previously demonstrated the necessary skills may ride larger motorcycles. New customers will not be permitted to join the tour on motorcycles larger than 800cc unless an acception is made by our office for those who can demonstrate the neccessary big-bike riding skills to successfuly navigate the terrain specific to this event. Questions, please send an email to info@motodiscovery.com
No, there is no camping on this event.
This is a great tour for someone who wants to experience the best of California back roads and the CABDR. Ideal candidates should be very comfortable riding 2-track dirt, stretches of mild to difficult sand and gravel roads. If you would like to learn new riding skills and increase your comfort level off-road, please consider joining us for a MotoDiscovery Training Tour. Skill fuels confidence!
It is up to you. Some participants enjoy riding or trailering their personal motorcycle to the rendezvous while others would rather 'fly-and-ride' and have a rental motorcycle ready to go when they arrive. The biggest consideration is the bike size and style. The Heart of California can be ridden on any size dual-sport or adventure motorcycle that is well maintained and equipped with the proper dual-purpose tire. Please see 'disclaimer' above about bike size requirements.
All of the rental motorcycles listed on this tour page are well-suited and outfitted for this tour. If you have additional questions, please email us at Rentals@MotoDiscovery.com .
Yes. We provide a support vehicle capable of a limited amount of personal gear. Space and size limitations will be sent with pre-tour information booklet.
Our tour guides and support vehicle drivers are well-versed in motorcycle mechanics. While we have to maintain the tour and the experience of our other guests, should we not be able to repair your motorcycle in the field, we'll do our best to facilitate a repair at the nearest dealership or mechanic shop.
Yes. We have a comfortable overland support vehicle that can accommodate a limited number of passengers in comfort and style. If you are planning to ride 2-up, please understand that this is not an event to learn to safely ride off-road with a passenger. Consider attending one of our Rider Training Tours if you would like to sharpen your off-pavement skills.
We seek out quality lodging and accommodations whenever possible. There is no camping on this tour. We will generally stay at smaller family-style places that have unique amenities such as hot springs when available.
Altitude should not be an issue on this event. There will be days when we ride up to higher elevations, but only for brief periods.
Up to 70% of the route can be ridden on dirt if that is the preference of the rider. Options exist for pavement and easier bypasses.
This is NOT a tour for a beginner off-road rider. Please consider joining us for an Immersion Rider Training with us if you are not sure your skills are up to par. We will provide you with exceptional instructors, a tailored curriculum and the opportunity to practice your skills in a real-world touring environment.
You will receive a comprehensive pre-tour information packet that includes a checklist and all supporting information to make sure you are in the know regarding all aspects of this adventure touring experience.
Can I arrange for a private custom tour of California for just me and my friends?
