Who is a good candidate for a training tour?
If you’ve never been on the dirt but have the desire and physical means this is a great start. More experienced off-road riders will also gain from this training tour as we focus on the fundamentals often lost over time.
What kind of curriculum can I expect?
We start off with a classroom session, move to an area where posture, body position, and other important basics are learned. By the end of the first day of training, slow speed skills are demonstrated and exercised. The second day we get into the real world environment of off-road touring, gradually elevating the technicality of the ride as you feel you are ready to advance. The key here is that the groups are small (maximum of 8). The training is geared to your personal progress and we don’t move ahead until you are ready.
Should I rent a bike or bring my own?
If you have one of the “mega” touring machines such as the BMW R1200GS, and you have not been off road with it, you may benefit from a riding a lighter weight rental where the weight and performance will not be so overwhelming - so renting should be considered. Fear of dropping your bike is also inhibiting. Contact us to reserve your DRZ400s rental today.
What can you tell me about your rental motorcycles?
Our fresh Suzuki DRZ 400S rental motorcycles are ideally suited for off-road trails and ribbons of desert asphalt and are well suited for this event. The nimble, liquid-cooled DRZ is a time-proven dual-sport motorcycle - lightweight, with an impressive amount of torque to tackle with confidence all phases of the training both on and off-road. Our street-legal DRZs come equipped with knobby DOT tires (Dunlop 606 or equivalent) aluminum skid plates and radiator guards, tank bags, hand guards and small tail bags. Because we provide a support vehicle, your bikes will remain unencumbered by your gear to maximize your training and touring experience. Please be sure to read our Rental Terms and Conditions.
Can you tell me about flight and transportation options to get to the event?
Regarding arrival airports and transportation - Here are 3 options:
- Moab Utah (Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY) - This is the closest airport to the 3-Step Hideaway, about a 60-minute drive south of the city of Moab. Flight options are limited to this airport. MotoDiscovery can arrange a transfer to pick you up and bring you to the event rendezvous. You can also rent a car in Moab. The event ENDS on the following Friday, after breakfast. Our staff will offer the option to ride back to the 3-Step Hideaway as a group via a scenic dual-sport ride. Alternatively, you can plan your departure from the hotel that morning and head directly to the Moab Airport to fly out. We can help arrange a taxi or other transport to get you to the airport should you choose this option on Friday, June 7.
- Grand Junction Airport (GJT) - This is the next closest airport and offers considerably greater flight options and services. From GJT to the event rendezvous is a little under 3 hours driving. You can arrange an early pickup of your rental motorcycle and ride to the event and enjoy a beautiful scenic drive to the 3-Step Hideaway. If the timing works, our staff can transport you to and from the event, as we are based in Grand Junction.
- Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) is the furthest away and has the greatest flight options but requires the longest drive to the event and back.
I’m an experienced off-road rider but a little rusty. Can this course be good for me?
Of course. You will advance more quickly. You can then concentrate on those techniques that minimize stress and physical exertion, reducing fatigue, riding more smoothly and pushing the limits of your motorcycle. But we must stress that this course is not about speed. To the contrary. Slow speed maneuvering skills are essential. Managing all levels of terrain comfortably from rocky surfaces to lose sand is where we want to take you and even experienced riders will find this “tune up” to lead to more enjoyable riding.
Who will be coaching me?
Our coaches are the best. They not only demonstrate but they explain the physics of what makes for proficient riding. Safety is first. Always. Our coaches are touring people just like you and they have traveled internationally, experienced the challenges that come with international touring where the best roads and treasures are found off the pavement. And because we will keep our groups to no more than 8 riders, you can count on getting their personal instruction.
The last day ends in the City of Moab, how do we get back to the 3-Step Hideaway where I parked my car/trailer?
On the last day of the event, we wake up in the city of Moab and have a leisurely breakfast. Our coaching and support team then leads a scenic dual-sport ride back to 3-Step Hideaway. Some folks prefer to leave their vehicle/trailer in the town of Moab so they can make a quick, convenient morning departure. For this reason, the ride back to 3-Step is optional. We normally arrive back to 3-Step between 1-3pm, depending on the conditions and preferences of the group.
Anything I should know about the 3-Step Hideaway?
3-Stem is a gem of a venue, situated in the high desert, about 50 miles south of the City of Moab. A couple of things you should know:
- There is no cell service nor internet service available at 3-Step. There are points nearby where one can get a signal, but for the most part, prepare to be 'off the grid' for a few days.
- Regarding alcohol, Utah has strict alcohol and tax laws that regulate the sale of beer, wine, and spirits. 3-Step has a variety of domestic and micro-brew beer for sale in the Cantina. If you prefer wine or spirits, you must arrange to bring your own or contact us and we can arrange to pick you up some in Colorado on our way to the event.
- Bring a headlamp (or a flashlight) - Because the 3-Step is completely solar powered, you will need a light to get around after dark. The buildings and cabins all have electric lights, however.
- We cannot guarantee a single room for you at 3-Step Hideaway. Single occupancy is, however, available for all other accommodations following our departure from 3-Step.
